Michael Horta

Mike was raised in Redlands. He attended Redlands High School where he played football and wrestled. After graduating he joined the United States Army. He retired after 13 1/2 years of service due to his injury.

Living with an injury, Mike thrived playing wheelchair basketball for the Eagles and Rolling Bears and would later coach the same team. He also attended the annual VA Wheelchair Games where he participated in shotput, discus, javelin, archery and wheelchair basketball He also attended the annual VA ski clinic where he loved to monoski on the slopes. In 1992, he attended the paralympics in Barcelona Spain where he medaled in wheelchair basketball.

Mike lived a fulfilling life as a husband, father, brother, coach and friend to many.

He is survived by his wife Tami Horta, children: Karon Akins (Conrad), Kristina Horta, Tommy Melendez and Robby Melendez. His four grandchildren Alex, Saige, Killian and Caine. His brothers Art Horta (Betty), Henry Horta (Barbara) and Edward Horta. His sister Martha. Along with countless nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his mother Helen, father Henry and sister Sheila.

My deepest felt condolences to the Family of Mike Horta and sorrow for your loss .

Mike was a wonderful spirited soul , such a nice man who will not be forgotten by all who knew him .What strength what courage .
